How do you get corn kernels off the cob?

I must be doing something wrong because it's slow, difficult, labour- intensive and I end up squashing most of them. There must be a better way, otherwise canned and frozen corn wouldn't be so cheap. And how is it done commercially? We sometimes succeed in growing sweet corn in our garden.
