Internet Cables????????????????????/?

I only remember one for the top of my head is a T1 cable. Which cable is the fastest (commercially available and not for ridiculous high prices). What are all the cables available and how can you find out which cable you have at home? Also what is the speed limit for each cable? My house has a 8mbps connection by SureWest what cable would I most likely have?
